Quotation: On the Sacraments

"In the Lutheran tradition we teach that the sacraments confirm that God is present everywhere.  David Rhoads explains that 'if we can be assured by Christ's word that Christ is in, with, and under such ordinary elements as grapes and grain and water, then God is indeed in every ordinary thing in life.  That makes everything (not Sacraments, but) sacramental.'  The finite is capable of bearing the infinite."
-- Mark Brocker, Coming Home to Earth (Eugene, Ore.: Cascade Books, 2016), p. 58, and quoting Rhoads, "Reflections on a Lutheran Theology of Creation," in Earth and Word: Classic Sermons on Saving the Planet (New York: Continuum, 2007).

In between summer class assignments and too-frequent distractions, I've been reading this new work of creation theology by Lutheran pastor Mark Brocker.  Book review to come later; for the present I wanted to share this wonderful quote.  I'll be adding David Rhoads' work to my reading list.
