woodpecker

There was a woodpecker this morning on the kid's tree outside my office window.  Didn't have an opportunity to take a photograph, but he (she? are female woodpeckers as colorful as males?) was a delight!  Attached himself (herself?) to the side of the tree and doggedly pecked away for a minute or so before flitting off into the backyard.  So very cool.  A simple sighting of one of nature's miracles in action.  The world is an amazing place to include a creature so perfectly adapted, able to use his (her?) feathered red head as a hammer to gain sustenance.
