o come all ye faithful

This morning I stopped in at the kid's school for one of the "coffee and conversation" hours the PTA occasionally hosts.  Today's gathering was a special one, as a group of dedicated volunteers just finished a major clean-up of the parent room and unearthed a silver service belonging to a predecessor school's PTA (ca. 1935!).  The PTA decided it would be fun to serve our Starbucks from silver carafes, and we enjoyed cucumber sandwiches and experimented with raising our pinkies.

Those long-ago moms were faithful to the standards of their day, putting forth what had to have been a tremendous amount of effort to provide an example of proper conduct and decorum for their children.  Our current moms and dads trend more casual, but the examples of dedication I see every day from parents and teachers blow me away.  They truly are the faithful, conscientiously working toward a better future for the children of our community.  They follow many religious traditions, and some don't consider themselves religious at all, but they are among my saints.
